Tuesday, August 5, 6:00 - 7:00 pm CT
Virtual via Zoom
In this talk, Ramana will explain why expanding atomic energy to deal with the climate crisis is not only naïve but dangerous. He will lay out the arguments for why it is not feasible to expand nuclear power fast enough to make it relevant to the climate crisis and why such an expansion would divert resources away from faster and cheaper solutions. In addition, he will elaborate on the risks of accidents, the impossibility of dealing with radioactive wastes, and why the technology for nuclear energy will always leave the door open for nuclear annihilation.
Expanding nuclear power would leave us in the worst of both worlds.
M.V. Ramana is the Simons Chair in Disarmament, Global and Human Security and Professor at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. He is the author of The Power of Promise: Examining Nuclear Energy in India, the co-editor of Prisoners of the Nuclear Dream, and author of Nuclear is Not the Solution: The Folly of Atomic Power in the Age of Climate. Ramana is a member of the International Panel on Fissile Materials, the Canadian Pugwash Group, the International Nuclear Risk Assessment Group, and the team that produces the annual World Nuclear Industry Status Report. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Leo Szilard Award from the American Physical Society.
