Introductory Iconography: Sketching the Canon with Magdalene Grace Deane

Sunday, February 2, 2:00 - 4:00 pm
Shalom Spirituality Center

Iconography is an ancient Christian art form believed to have first been practiced by St. Luke the Evangelist, who painted icons of the Virgin Mary and Sts. Peter and Paul. While many icons depict Jesus, they may also depict a wide variety of biblical holy figures worthy of veneration. Colors, geometric shapes, and the materials used are tremendously symbolic within the canonical tradition of iconography.

This 2-hour workshop with Magdalene Grace Deane, master iconographer and professor of Byzantine iconography, will lead participants through writing their own iconographic sketch based on the Jerusalem cross. This sketch will help prepare the foundation for future work with icon writing with paint. No artistic experience is required, and this workshop will be a wonderful experience for parents and children to do together! Magdalene is a Master in Fine Arts, and attending her workshop may count as theological enrichment hours for monastics, seminarians, and clergy.

Magdalene Grace Deane is the Director and Master Instructor at Katholikon Liturgical Art Studio and Gallery in Cable Car Square, Dubuque. She is also the Tea Master and Master Herbalist at ByzanTEAum, located in the lower level of the same building in Cable Car Square.
